About Me

Maryellen McCone

Maryellen McCone, LPC/MHSP

I received my Master's degree in psychology and counseling from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont in 2008 and was licensed as a professional counselor-mental health service provider after completing my required post graduate work in June of 2012. I presently work in the Counseling Service at The University of the South and maintain a private practice at Stillpoint in Sewanee, Tennessee. I am a member of the Tennessee Licensed Professional Counselors association.

While each therapeutic relationship is unique and utilizes techniques which are appropriate to the individual, my focus is drawn from cognitive therapy which identifies how our thoughts influence our feeling and a mindfulness based practice which includes meditation and allows us to identify our thoughts and feelings in the present moment. This is coupled with self compassion training in order to allow us to make changes that are in our best long term interest and to do so with compassion and not judgement. I believe that frequently a client knows where they want to be in life and working with a therapist can facilitate the process of achieving their goals.

Prior to pursuing my career as a therapist I was a Registered Nurse for many years and worked in a variety of settings and maintain my license and work in this capacity every summer at a children's art camp. Working with people in the medical profession evolved into a desire to focus more on the counseling aspect and I undertook to first get an undergraduate degree in Psychology and then to go on to receive my graduate degree. I have conducted workshops on Mindful Self-Compassion and have taught these techniques in the Lifelong Learning program through Sewanee: The University of the South. I have completed teacher training in Mindful Self-Compassion through UC San Diego and have had a daily meditation practice since 2010. I also facilitate a weekly meditation group at the University of the South. I feel privileged to work with people in this capacity and to share their journey as they make changes that will eventually lead them to tap into their inherent strengths which will move them closer to the life they want to live.
